How To: Crack Filling Edition

One of the worst things you can do to an asphalt surface is nothing. Untreated cracks will only grow larger, leading to the entire asphalt surface needing replacement, which can cost upwards of $10,000. Not only is it expensive to repair, it is also a headache for any asphalt maintenance contractor or business that takes on the project. There are two essential elements to ensuring that cracks in asphalt surfaces are filled properly:

  1. Clean the damaged surface area of any debris, dirt and unwanted vegetation. Make sure that the sidewalls of the crack are cleared out as well.
  2. Apply your hot pour rubberized crack filler into the crack. Alternative liquid crack fillers that you can get at your local hardware store don’t have a rubberized base, making them less durable to hold up against the elements and will not work as well as rubberized crack filler.

Cold vs. Hot Pour

Fill Surface Cracks at Walking Speed

Operating a Crack Filling Machine

If you haven’t used a crack filling machine before, here are some tips on how to use your melter applicator machine to its full efficiency:

  1. Control the temperature. Rubberized blocks of crack fill are fully melted at 350º. Prevent crystallization by turning down the regulator at this point.
  2. Properly load your filler. Always wear safety gloves before loading filler into your machine. Besure to lean the rubber blocks toward the valving system when loading from the front or side of your machine.
  3. Only use the amount of material you need. Never overload your machine with filler. During the crack fill process, most machines will limit how much material is being laid to prevent overapplication.
  4. Use a Heat Lance and an asphalt crack squeegee. A heat lance can be used to clean your machine, burn unwanted vegetation and heat your valving system if any unexpected blockage may occur. Asphalt squeegees are great for spreading out crack filler that can’t be leveled out by your crack filling machine.
  5. Use the proper crack filler material. Different jobs require different crack fillers. The 3 types of crack filling material are liquid crack filler, rubberized crack filler, and oil-jacketed crack filler. The table below breaks down each type:
