Crack Filling Machines
Crack Filling Machines, Asphalt Melter Kettles, & Asphalt Crack Filling Equipment
Any successful sealcoating contractor will tell you that crack repair is an important, yet often an overlooked step of the asphalt maintenance process (first step is to fill cracks, then apply sealcoat, then line striping). By repairing surface cracks, you will prevent water from entering through breaks in the asphalt. This avoids the creation of any potholes or uneven dips, protecting from the formation of a concave surface.

Fill Surface Cracks at Walking Speed
Just like a lawnmower or a shopping cart, crack filling machines allow you to repair cracks at walking speed. As an asphalt maintenance contractor, calculating how much money you’re generating per linear foot while crack filling is an important value to know. With machines designed to apply filler at a walking speed, you can easily be making $1 per linear foot, meaning every step you take is making money!
How to Use a Crack Filling Machine
If you haven’t used a crack filling machine before, here are some tips on how to use your melter applicator machine to its full efficiency:
- Control the temperature. Hot pour rubberized crack filler blocks of crack fill are fully melted in an asphalt melter applicator at 350º. Prevent crystallization by turning down the regulator at this point.
- Properly load your filler. Always wear safety gloves before loading filler into your machine. Besure to lean the rubber blocks toward the valving system when loading from the front or side of your machine.
- Only use the amount of material you need. Never overload your machine with filler. During the crack fill process, most machines will limit how much material is being laid to prevent overapplication.
- Use a Heat Lance and an asphalt crack squeegee. A heat lance can be used to clean your machine, burn unwanted vegetation and heat your valving system if any unexpected blockage may occur. Asphalt squeegees are great for spreading out crack filler that can’t be leveled out by your crack filling machine.
- Use the proper crack filler material. Different jobs require different crack fillers. The 3 types of crack filling material are liquid crack filler, rubberized crack filler, and oil-jacketed crack filler. The table below breaks down each type:
Types of Crack Filler
Crack Filler Material | Description |
Liquid Crack Filler (cold crack filler) |
Cold pour crack filler is most commonly used by homeowners for small projects, such as repairing a few cracks on an asphalt driveway
|
Hot Pour Rubberized Crack Filler |
The most popular type of crack filler. Ideal for large property owners, churches, airports and contractors who use direct fire rubberized crack filler for repairing cracks on their asphalt surfaces
|
Oil-Jacketed Crack Filler |
Primarily used by municipalities for filling extended miles of cracks on community roads
|
Utilize the most efficient method for filling cracks. Start the process with someone in charge of cleaning out the cracks. Then, a second person should follow up with a blower to get rid of the debris and unwanted vegetation. Lastly, the final person will use a crack melter applicator to fill the cracks and ensure a proper application and seal.
How To Fill Cracks Like a Pro: Step by Step
Whether you are a homeowner who has a few cracks in your driveway or a sealcoating contractor or asphalt maintenance business that frequently works on large asphalt surfaces that need crack repair, finding the right equipment for your needs can be difficult. Luckily, the asphalt crack filling equipment used for crack filling comes in multiple shapes in sizes and can save you significant time and money, no matter what the size of your project is.
Our wide range of crack filling products and asphalt crack filling equipment are suited for a variety of job types and sizes, from small DIY projects to full-service asphalt maintenance businesses. To properly fill cracks in any asphalt surface, there are a few tools that you are going to need:
- Cleaning & Prep – It’s extremely important to remove all of the debris, such as rocks and weeds, from the damaged asphalt area prior to filling cracks. If you are performing crack repairs on a driveway or small surface, using a simple tool like a screwdriver will do the trick. For seal coating contractors and asphalt maintenance professionals, a machine like the Asphalt Crack Cleaning Heat Lance makes cleaning out and drying the damaged surface crack prior to filling it a breeze. Please note that it is important to make sure that the area you will be working on is completely dry before you begin performing any crack repairs.
- Hot Pour Melters – Asphalt surface cracks that are wider than 0.5” will require hot pour rubberized crack filler rather than cold pour. Applying cold pour crack filler by hand is only recommended for homeowners that are performing repairs on a minimal amount of cracks. However, asphalt maintenance businesses and professional contractors should be using an asphalt melter and applicator for hot pour filler rather than attempting a DIY repair by hand.
- Crack Filling Machines – We offer a variety of tools that make it quick and easy to apply your crack filler. You can find crack filling equipment from easy pour pots, which are best suited for smaller repairs, to 2-in-1 melter applicators that are able to heat and apply your hot pour rubberized crack filler. The capabilities of a 2-in-1 melter applicator make it the perfect option for those that frequently work with larger asphalt surfaces, such as sealcoating contractors and asphalt maintenance businesses.
- Sandliners – Adding sand to rubberized crack filler makes it much more durable. The filler material will last longer and hold firm against the elements. Get an excellent result that lasts longer and holds stronger by upgrading to a Sandliner!
- Other Crack Repair Equipment – A benefit of adding crack filling and repair to your existing asphalt maintenance services is that there are many tools that can help you save time and money. You can’t repair cracks without first cleaning them, which is done easily with an Asphalt Crack Cleaner Machine. Additionally, making sure that you are using the right crack filler will ensure professional results every time!
The crack filling equipment that you need will depend on the jobs you frequently work on, as well as the amount of time and money you want to save. With a wide range of products available to you, we're sure to have the tools that you need to fill cracks and get the job done and stay within your budget!
One of the worst things you can do to an asphalt surface is nothing. Untreated cracks will only grow larger, leading to the entire asphalt surface needing replacement, which can cost upwards of $10,000. Not only is it expensive to repair, it is also a headache for any asphalt maintenance contractor or business that takes on the project. There are two essential elements to ensuring that cracks in asphalt surfaces are filled properly:
- Clean the damaged surface area of any debris, dirt and unwanted vegetation. Make sure that the sidewalls of the crack are cleared out as well.
- Apply your hot pour rubberized crack filler into the crack. Alternative liquid crack fillers that you can get at your local hardware store don’t have a rubberized base, making them less durable to hold up against the elements and will not work as well as rubberized crack filler.
Cold vs. Hot Pour Crack Fillers
Many homeowners, property managers and contractors aren’t aware of the differences between hot pour and cold pour crack filler. Not sure which form of crack filling material is right for you? Start with this table that breaks down the primary characteristics of the two types:
Cold Pour Crack Filler | Hot Pour Crack Filler |
Known as cold crack filler, cold pour is typically offered as a cold liquid form. Is sold in one-gallon bottles or five-gallon pails |
Offered as rubber cubes of crack filler
which are used for melting in a crack filling machine |
Method of application: • Applied by hand using a U- or V-shaped squeegee over top of the crack to provide a smooth finish |
Two methods of application:
• Pour the hot pour crack filler into a pour pot asphalt melter and apply it by hand by using a U- or a V-shaped squeegee to even out the surface area • Or, use a 2-in-1 hot pour melter crack filler machine designed to quickly melt and easily apply filler into surface cracks |
Usually comes as an acrylic water-based solution and is available at most local hardware stores |
Comes as a rubber-based solution with adhesive materials to add tackiness for sticking and bonding to crack sidewalls
|
Primarily used for residential or smaller home DIY projects, such as driveways |
Used for both residential and commercial jobs. Ideal for large driveways, parking lots, roadways, racetracks, airports, etc.
